Annihilation is a surreal, dark book following a group of scientists as they explore and try to understand Area X. The story has
a lot of philosophical and scientific rhetoric,
which is tied into the illustration.
Area X messes with living things, plants included, that reside within it, and I wanted to mix the philosophical writings from the main character and the visuals that one gets
while reading through the book.
A nautilus shell represents life itself, with it being one of the most popular things in our world to show the "golden ratio", a pattern that occurs throughout nature. Ferns also exemplify this recurring pattern, so I wanted to combine them for a surrealistic cover that fits the strangeness of the book

One thing that was difficult in the beginning was the style in which to  create the cover in. After creating the shell seen in the final cover, I experimented with recreating the style seen in the actual covers of the book series. Though I liked the new illustration, and creating new versions of the covers, using my own style gives me room to create a series from redoing all the book covers.
